Beyond the RFP: Finding Your Place in the Philanthropic Research Ecosystem, November 13, 2026, 11-12:30 Arizona time (hosted by SBSRI and McAllister & Quinn)
In today’s philanthropic research landscape, private foundation funders increasingly identify potential grantees through the people, networks, and ideas already shaping a field. For faculty, becoming visible in these ecosystems can open the door to relationships, invitations, and funding opportunities that may never begin with a public solicitation. In Part 2 of our two-part webinar series on private foundation funding, McAllister & Quinn will offer a framework for building sustained visibility and relationships within the philanthropic research ecosystem. During this workshop, we will discuss strategies for moving beyond opportunity-driven prospecting and becoming an active participant in the communities where philanthropic priorities take shape. This practical session will further explore how foundations find grantees; how foundations, affinity groups, funder collaboratives, and research consortia connect; and how to identify the program officers and networks behind emerging areas of investment.
Selected topics of discussion include:
- Understanding why visibility matters: See how relationships and field presence can position researchers for consideration before an RFP is posted.
- Mapping the philanthropic ecosystem: Use foundation 990s, grant announcements, conference agendas, and field publications to identify funders, program officers, and influential networks.
- Finding the right affinity groups and convenings: Explore networks relevant to the social and behavioral sciences, including opportunities that welcome researcher participation.
- Showing up as a field participant: Learn strategies for contributing research findings and briefings before making an ask and cultivating warm introductions.
