Congratulations to Msafiri Otonya from the Second Language Acquisition & Teaching Graduate Interdisciplinary program who received an SBSRI Dissertation Research Grant.

Msafiri’s project explores the language attitudes of Black international students from Tanzania toward their own English before and after living and studying in the U.S. Through a longitudinal case study involving questionnaires, interviews, and spontaneous conversational narratives, the research seeks to study how language attitudes evolve over time and across different social contexts. The findings will offer valuable insights for administrators, policymakers, and language educators into the changing attitudes of marginalized students toward their own language varieties, helping to develop solutions that enhance students' experiences and support their academic and professional success.
