Congratulations to Jennifer Byran from the School of Anthropology who received a SBSRI Dissertation Research Grant.

Jennifer's work addresses Southeastern Indigenous weaving practices through the systematic documentation of objects scattered across museum collections in the U.S. and Europe. Through a study of baskets and sashes from 1700-1830, she studies how Indigenous women weavers shaped their world and were also connected to the world around them. The SBSRI award supports research to document New Orleans collections which steward rare and understudied examples of Southeastern basketry and textiles, providing a key link in the gaps of our knowledge of Southeastern weaving during this time.
