James Paules Receives SBSRI Pre-doctoral Research Grant
Dec. 11, 2024
Congratulations to James Paules from the Department of History who received an SBSRI Pre-doctoral Research Grant.
Though forests rarely come to mind when thinking about the arid Southwest, the arboreal communities that blanket this region's high mountains and plateaus have been central to its history. With SBSRI funding, James will travel to the special collections at Fort Lewis College, Durango, CO. The documents housed there will allow him to explore how Southwest forests were central to expressions of Indigenous sovereignty and resistance in the face of U.S. imperialism, to the expansion of American systems of land tenure and the market economy, and to the development of professional forest management under the Forest Service.
