SBSRI promotes research in social and behavioral sciences. The Institute supports basic research on individual behavior (including linguistic and psychological aspects), social organization, theory and values, and public policy. Knowledge gained through research can be used to address practical social problems.

The Institute's primary mission is directed toward providing funding and support services for faculty and students in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. A secondary priority is to help with SBS research elsewhere at the University of Arizona through cooperative arrangements wherever possible. In particular, SBSRI provides support for interdisciplinary research that is not organized around a specialized set of problems. Scholars are all organized by and evaluated within disciplines but encouraged to apply their knowledge beyond disciplinary boundaries.
